Improving Indoor Air Quality in Your Minnetonka Home in the Winter

In Minnetonka, indoor air quality is particularly important to think about this time of year. Abel Heating & Cooling has some indoor air quality suggestions on how to improve the air quality inside your home, and in this blog, we’re going to give you a few more tips.

First, it’s important to identify the sources of indoor air pollution. Some are pretty obvious, like cigarettes, but others are probably ones you never even thought of! For example: air fresheners, carpeting, hair spray, nail polish … even your central heating and cooling systems! But there are ways to combat these pollutants to improve the indoor air quality in your Minnetonka home.

Avoid spraying air fresheners, hair spray, etc. if possible. Try to find green building materials for things like cleaners and other synthetic products. Increase the ventilation in your Minnetonka home. Because it’s winter, keeping windows open isn’t feasible, so use your attic fan, your kitchen or bathroom fan or leave a window air conditioner unit in the window (maybe in a room you don’t use too often) and leave the vent control open to help improve the indoor air quality in your Minnetonka home.

Try to control the level of humidity in your home too. Keeping it at 30% to 60% can help keep dust, mildew, and mold from getting too bad. Plus, doing chores on a regular basis – dusting, vacuuming, etc. – can help keep contaminants down to a minimum (and help with any allergy problems you or a family member might have).

There are also air filtration systems and air cleaners you can buy. These can vary widely in price and effectiveness in improving indoor air quality, so do your research first before purchasing one for your Minnetonka home.
