HVAC Contractors Help You Prepare for Spring

Spring is officially here! It's that wonderful time of year when it's important to start thinking about switching over from heating to cooling. If you're looking for an HVAC contractor near Minnetrista, you've come to the right place. Abel Heating & Cooling has a number of HVAC contractors ready to help you make the switch.

Check Heating & Cooling Units
As soon as it is around 70 degrees for a couple of days, turn on your cooling system. Does it kick on and work properly? If not, call an HVAC contractor right away. You don't want to wait until it's an emergency to have a professional look at the unit. Even if your unit does seem to be working properly, it may be wise to have an expert look at it if it's been a couple of years since you last had it inspected.

Check & Replace Filters
Did you take the time to replace your filters at the end of the summer? If not, make sure that you replace them before you use your cooling unit for the first time. A clean filter will not only help you keep your air cleaner, but it also helps your equipment function more efficiently. An HVAC contractor will be able to help you determine which filter you need and help you replace it.

Check Windows & Joints
We advise that you take some time to check your windows on your own time. Find out if they open and close properly. Are they sealing tightly? If not, check the weather stripping, as it may be time to change it. Caulk around your windows, if necessary. This will help keep the cool air where it belongs—inside. Also, visually inspect your screens. Are they all intact? If there are holes or rips, take this time to replace or repair your screens.

Improving Indoor Air Quality in Your Minnetonka Home in the Winter

In Minnetonka, indoor air quality is particularly important to think about this time of year. Abel Heating & Cooling has some indoor air quality suggestions on how to improve the air quality inside your home, and in this blog, we’re going to give you a few more tips.

First, it’s important to identify the sources of indoor air pollution. Some are pretty obvious, like cigarettes, but others are probably ones you never even thought of! For example: air fresheners, carpeting, hair spray, nail polish … even your central heating and cooling systems! But there are ways to combat these pollutants to improve the indoor air quality in your Minnetonka home.

Avoid spraying air fresheners, hair spray, etc. if possible. Try to find green building materials for things like cleaners and other synthetic products. Increase the ventilation in your Minnetonka home. Because it’s winter, keeping windows open isn’t feasible, so use your attic fan, your kitchen or bathroom fan or leave a window air conditioner unit in the window (maybe in a room you don’t use too often) and leave the vent control open to help improve the indoor air quality in your Minnetonka home.

Try to control the level of humidity in your home too. Keeping it at 30% to 60% can help keep dust, mildew, and mold from getting too bad. Plus, doing chores on a regular basis – dusting, vacuuming, etc. – can help keep contaminants down to a minimum (and help with any allergy problems you or a family member might have).

There are also air filtration systems and air cleaners you can buy. These can vary widely in price and effectiveness in improving indoor air quality, so do your research first before purchasing one for your Minnetonka home.

And for all of your Minnetonka HVAC needs and for answers to any indoor air quality questions you may have, call Abel Heating & Cooling at (952) 472-COOL (2665) or contact us online.

Make Your Heating System Last Longer

Wisconsin's Journal Sentinel likens your heating system to a car, which can last a very long time if you take care of it, schedule regular inspections and take the necessary maintenance steps to keep things running smoothly.

Your heating system is a vital part of your home, especially during Minnesota winters. The last thing you want is for your heating system to malfunction when temperatures are at their lowest. In order to ensure this doesn't happen, you have to take care of your heating system and have it inspected regularly.

It's recommended that you hire a professional HVAC contractor to come in and take a look at your system, as well as make any needed repairs on your system. If you take care to perform preventative maintenance on your system and fix any deficiencies, your heating system should serve you well for many years.
